Fort Augustus

Nestled on the southern shores of Loch Ness, Fort Augustus is a small yet captivating village that boasts a rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and unique attractions that make it a must-see stop on any Scottish tour. During our recent journey, we had the pleasure of exploring this picturesque location and witnessing one of Scotland’s engineering wonders – the Caledonian Canal.

The Historical Charm of Fort Augustus
Fort Augustus takes its name from the fort that once stood in the village, built after the Jacobite Rising in the early 18th century. It served as a military garrison, playing a strategic role in controlling the Highlands during a turbulent time in Scottish history. Though much of the original fort is no longer visible, the spirit of this historical period is still palpable in the village, with its cobbled streets and heritage buildings.

Today, Fort Augustus is a peaceful spot where visitors can enjoy a slower pace of life while taking in the spectacular views of Loch Ness and the surrounding hills. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of Nessie, the famous Loch Ness Monster!

The Caledonian Canal: An Engineering Marvel
One of the highlights of our stop was seeing the Caledonian Canal in action. This impressive waterway, built between 1803 and 1822 by the renowned civil engineer Thomas Telford, was originally constructed to provide a safer route for ships navigating the often treacherous waters of Scotland’s west coast. The canal stretches for 60 miles, linking the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, with 22 miles of the route being man-made and the rest following the natural course of Loch Ness and other lochs.

At Fort Augustus, the canal features a series of locks that allow boats to navigate the height differences between Loch Ness and the surrounding waters. Watching the locks in motion is truly a spectacle – boats are raised or lowered by large gates that control the water flow, adjusting the water levels as vessels make their journey through the canal. It’s a fascinating process that showcases both the ingenuity of the engineers who designed it and the timeless nature of the waterway’s operations.

Exploring the Village
Aside from the canal, Fort Augustus has plenty to offer visitors. Whether it’s grabbing a bite at one of the local cafes, wandering along the scenic canal paths, or visiting the nearby Benedictine Abbey, there’s something for everyone. The abbey, founded in the late 19th century, is a peaceful and beautiful spot that adds to the village’s tranquil atmosphere.

If you’re in the mood for adventure, Fort Augustus is also a gateway to exploring more of the Scottish Highlands. From here, you can embark on a cruise of Loch Ness, go hiking in the surrounding hills, or simply relax and take in the panoramic views that this part of Scotland is so famous for.
